About That Slothy Life

I started Legal Sloth to help take the mystery out of legal documents and legal requirements for businesses, as well as share some wellness practices along the way. I am a licensed attorney based in Austin, Texas. After graduating from Stanford University with a law degree and a MS from Stanford’s School of Engineering, I went to work for one of the largest law firms in the world. I worked on several multi-million dollar deals and made plenty of money, but I often didn’t leave the office until after midnight. I had dedicated my entire life to school and success, only to be miserable with the “reward” that had been waiting for me at the end of the long road of hard work. I needed a change.

I abruptly quit the large corporate firm after a partner, who had repeatedly made fun of my last name with an exaggerated Spanish accent, told me I didn’t have a trustworthy face. It was the last straw for me. I had no plan and no job lined up. I tried for months to get a job at another law firm, but nobody wanted to hire me after quitting the firm so quickly. When I couldn’t get hired, I decided to start my own consumer packaged good business and open up my own legal practice.

It took me months before I got my first legal client, but I eventually earned the business of several venture backed startups who contract me out for various legal services. Within a couple of years, I was making significantly more than I ever made at the large firm, traveling the world while serving my clients, and I was my own boss. In that process, I learned that many people view legal documents and complying with business laws as intimidating and overwhelming. I also found that several of my clients were just as stressed as I was when I worked at a large law firm. So, I began this site to reach more people.

I post about legal tips, as well as the most recent research on health and wellness practices. I’ve also developed several DIY legal product kits available for purchase, which can help you incorporate your business, hire employees, file trademarks, or execute an agreement with a customer. There is generally no substitution for a great lawyer, but these documents are the culmination of years of legal practice, and by purchasing them, you may be able to save thousands compared to the cost of hiring an attorney.

A great start would be to download my e-book below, which is a great primer on what type of legal entity is best for you. It also has some information about tax consequences related to which business entity you choose – information I relied on to save literally thousands in taxes each year.

Please note that NOTHING on the site is intended as legal advice, and your reading/using the site does not constitute any attorney-client relationship.
